What ChatGPT says for why fans should follow FC Dallas
I asked ChatGPT, one of the internet's examples of the future of AI, for a three point letter for why a soccer fan would fall in love with FC Dallas.
ChatGPT is an AI chatbot in development, and as it has become more popular, the uses for its technology have fascinated and frightened all kinds of people. It can pass some rigorous tests. Some students may or may not have been caught using it to write their term papers. But it often produces boilerplate, milquetoast nonsense.
So, of course, I had to ask it to make a case for why a soccer fan for three reasons why they should fall in love with FC Dallas.
And, yeah, this is what it produced:
A Storied History: FC Dallas, formerly known as the Dallas Burn, has a rich history in Major League Soccer (MLS), dating back to their founding in 1996. Over the years, the team has established itself as a competitive force in the league, winning the U.S. Open Cup in 1997 and the Supporters' Shield in 2016. The team also has a strong youth development system, producing top-level talent such as former U.S. Men's National Team players Brek Shea and Jesse Gonzalez.
A Dynamic Style of Play: Under head coach Luchi Gonzalez, FC Dallas has become known for its attractive and attacking style of play. With a focus on possession-based soccer, the team utilizes its technical ability and teamwork to create scoring opportunities and entertain fans. The team's attacking philosophy has also led to a number of exciting moments on the field, including clutch goals and thrilling comebacks.
A Strong Connection to the Community: FC Dallas has a strong connection to the community, and the team and its players are active in local initiatives and events. From supporting local charities to hosting youth clinics and camps, FC Dallas is committed to giving back to the community and making a positive impact. Additionally, the team's home matches are a major source of pride for local soccer fans, and provide a fun and exciting atmosphere for families and fans of all ages.
For these reasons, any soccer fan should fall in love with FC Dallas. With a storied history, dynamic style of play, and strong connection to the community, FC Dallas is a club that truly embodies the spirit of the beautiful game.
ChatGPT obviously is drawing from dated information. The reference to Jesse Gonzalez is bizarre even though the bot is well aware that he was arrested for a domestic violence charge a few years back. (I asked it that in a followup.) And, of course, Luchi is no longer the head coach.
The Brek Shea reference is… beautiful, though.
Did ChatGPT get anything right? Does FC Dallas have a strong connection to the community, or is this just boilerplate stuff? Could it be written for any Major League Soccer franchise?
